Mysid Shrimp

Mysid Shrimp
Mysid opposum Shrimp up to 1/4 inch in size. Used primarily for feeding finicky Marine tropicals and seahorses. Mysids are difficult to culture due to their cannibalistic behavior of picking off weaker individuals. They can be kept for short periods of time (several weeks) by putting them in a tub with medium aeriation and feeding daily with fresh hatched brine shrimp. Frequent water changes are a must. These are kept at low specific gravities of around 1.014.

A quick primer on how to keep Mysis shrimps - Americamysis bahia

1. A shallow plastic container like a shoe box (up to 200), or sweater box (up to 2000) size is recommended.

2. Airstone with medium air.

3. 3 to 4 inches of Salt Water at 1.014 sp or above. Temperatures can range from 60F to 80F.

4. Feed daily ground flake, or fresh hatched brine shrimp. Frozen freshed hatched brineshrimp will do.

5. A water change of 30 to 50 % should be made every 3 days.

6. Use a fine mesh net to move them.

7. Use as feed to other animals after the mysis have been fed.

Discussion: These shrimp are excellent foods for gobies, seahorses, seadragons, cuttlefish, baby octopi, and a host of others. They get up to 3/8 of an inch, are marsupial, easy to keep for short periods of time, and easily handled. They are relatively short lived, but keeping a group for 2 weeks or so is doable.
